The Kasanag Daughters Foundation, Inc. (KDFI) held its annual celebration of the Feast of St. Joseph on March 19, 2024. St. Joseph is a significant figure for the foundation, being one of its patron saints.
The celebration commenced with a Holy Eucharist, followed by a program and a simple meal. This tradition brings together beneficiaries, staff, board members, former residents, benefactors, SCJ priests, and friends of the foundation. It serves as a time to honor their patron saint and express gratitude for his protection and guidance.
This year, the celebration was led by Fr. Niño Etulle, SCJ, the SCJ Philippines Regional Superior.
St. Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary and the foster father of Jesus, played a vital role in God’s plan of salvation. He ensured Jesus’ lineage continued in the line of King David, fulfilling the prophecies of the Messiah. Much of what we know about St. Joseph comes from the Gospel of Matthew. The Gospels depict him as a silent but faithful guardian, fulfilling his responsibility to protect Jesus and Mary.
St. Joseph was an ordinary laborer, yet he was chosen to be the spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Scripture portrays him as a just man, highlighting his faithfulness in fulfilling this sacred trust. He faced challenges, but his faith remained strong, as seen in his acceptance of Mary’s pregnancy. His suffering contributed to the work of redemption and established him as a permanent witness to the Virgin Birth.
Following these events, St. Joseph fades from the biblical narrative, suggesting his death may have occurred before Jesus’ public ministry. Tradition holds that he died peacefully in the presence of Jesus and Mary.
For centuries, St. Joseph remained a relatively obscure figure. However, in the 15th century, his veneration gained momentum through the efforts of saints like Brigid of Sweden, Bernardine of Siena, and Teresa of Avila. Today, the Church celebrates St. Joseph on two occasions: March 19th honors him personally and his role in salvation, while May 1st recognizes him as the patron of workers and a guide for establishing fair social norms.
The Kasanag Daughters Foundation’s celebration of the Feast of St. Joseph reflects the importance of this saint in their community. It’s a time for them to come together, express gratitude, and find inspiration in St. Joseph’s life.
