SCJ Philippines Regional Assembly 2025

“I will give you shepherds after my own heart” (Jer. 3:15) served as the theme of the SCJ Philippines Regional Assembly 2025, held from February 17-21 at the Sacred Heart Formation House in Cagayan de Oro City. This significant gathering brought together 29 members, along with Fr. Carlos Luis Suárez Codorniú, General Superior of the Dehonians, and Fr. Augustinus Guntoro, SCJ General Councilor, from Rome.

The theme, inspired by the Book of Jeremiah, set the tone for the assembly’s overarching objectives: to deepen awareness of the essential role of both initial and ongoing formation, to recognize the value of every aspect of formation, and to enhance programs for initial formation while developing a comprehensive framework for ongoing formation. Special emphasis was placed on ongoing formation as a cornerstone of priestly and religious life—not merely as a requirement but as a transformative process fostering spiritual renewal, strengthening commitment to service, and equipping priests and religious to face contemporary pastoral, social, and ecclesial challenges with wisdom, compassion, and fidelity to God’s call.

The assembly commenced with a spiritual reflection led by Fr. Nathaniel C. Lerio, SSJV, STL, from the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro. Drawing from the words of Jeremiah, he explored the essence of pastoral leadership and the importance of divine discernment in guiding God’s people. His reflection highlighted Jesus’ model of servant leadership, the role of the Apostles, and the increasing participation of the laity, particularly as emphasized by Vatican II. He also addressed the challenges of clericalism and underscored the leadership models of Popes John XXIII and Francis, emphasizing aggiornamento, pastoral engagement, and service-oriented leadership. Effective Church leadership, he noted, must be visionary, participatory, mission-driven, and adaptable to cultural and societal shifts.
The morning continued with moments of silent prayer, adoration, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, offering a sacred space for a personal encounter with God. In the afternoon, members engaged in personal sharing, fostering deeper connections and a strong sense of community.

Over the next two days, Fr. Chris U. de Guzman, SThD, from Nazaret Formation House in the Archdiocese of Lipa, enriched the assembly with thought-provoking presentations on Priestly Formation, The Man Behind the Cassock: The Dark Side of the Priesthood, and The Way to Spirituality. These sessions provided a foundation for deep reflection and meaningful discussions, encouraging the participants to examine their personal journeys and the broader realities of their vocation.

On February 20, attendees were divided into smaller groups according to their years in priesthood. These sessions allowed for candid conversations about personal challenges, particularly in the physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of their lives. The insights and recommendations gathered will serve as the foundation for developing a comprehensive Plan of Ongoing Formation, ensuring that the SCJ community remains dynamic and responsive to the needs of its members and the Church.

The final day focused on detailed reports from various commissions, along with updates on the region’s ongoing activities and initiatives. These discussions provided a comprehensive overview of progress, challenges, and future directions, reinforcing a collective vision and shared commitment among attendees.
Despite the demanding schedule, the assembly proved to be a deeply enriching experience. It provided a balance of spiritual nourishment, intellectual engagement, and fraternal bonding, reaffirming the SCJ commitment to forming shepherds after Christ’s own heart—leaders who embody love, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to serving God’s people.
