Sacred Heart Formation House, Cagayan de Oro City, 2nd Sunday of Lent

The Gospel of the Transfiguration reveals a moment of light in the midst of a journey that leads toward suffering. Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. There His face shines, His clothes become radiant, and the disciples glimpse His divine glory. This vision is not given to amaze them, but to strengthen them. Soon they will witness His agony and death. The light on the mountain prepares them for the darkness of Calvary.

This passage teaches that God sometimes grants moments of clarity and consolation so that we may remain faithful when faith becomes difficult. In our lives, such moments may come during prayer, a retreat, a quiet Mass, or a simple act of charity. They are not rewards to keep, but gifts to remember. When trials arrive, we must recall the light we once saw.

Peter wants to build tents and stay on the mountain. This is a natural reaction. We prefer spiritual comfort to daily sacrifice. Yet the voice from the cloud does not tell the disciples to remain there. Instead it commands: “Listen to Him.” True discipleship is not about staying in moments of consolation, but about obedience to Christ in ordinary life. Listening means trusting His word even when the path leads downward from the mountain into the valley of struggle.

Lent invites us to climb the mountain through prayer, silence, and conversion. But it also sends us back into daily duties with renewed faith. The challenge is clear: do not seek only spiritual feelings; seek transformation. The measure of a true encounter with Christ is a changed life — more patience, more humility, more love.

As we continue this Lenten journey, we may ask ourselves:

  • Do I truly listen to Christ, or only when His words are easy?
  • Do I allow moments of grace to change my actions?
  • Am I willing to walk with Him not only in glory, but also on the road to the cross?

If we listen and follow, the promise of the Transfiguration becomes ours: beyond every cross waits the light of resurrection.
