April 1, 2026, marks the fourth death anniversary of Fr. Joseph C. Butlig. In this connection, the SCJ priests from the Cagayan de Oro area gathered on this day to celebrate the Holy Mass in his memory, giving thanks to God for the gift of his life and priestly ministry.
Fr. Joseph was born on November 27, 1979, in Alicia, Bohol. From a young age, he responded to God’s call with courage and dedication. He made his first profession of vows on May 13, 2007, and was ordained a priest on November 26, 2013, in the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart (SCJ). His priesthood, though brief in years, was rich in service and meaning.
He was known for his kindness, simplicity, and joyful spirit. Many remember how he welcomed people with a sincere smile and a compassionate heart. His ministry reached beyond the parish, especially through his service as project coordinator of the Kasanag Daughters Foundation, Inc., where he showed particular care for the poor and the vulnerable. In this way, he lived the Gospel not only in words but also through concrete acts of love.
The Holy Mass was presided over by Fr. John Karl Cabaluna, parish priest of the Immaculate Concepcion Parish in Aluba, Cagayan de Oro. Present at the celebration were Fr. Joseph’s father and his three sisters, together with fellow SCJ priests, relatives, and friends. Their presence reflected the deep bonds of love and unity that Fr. Joseph nurtured during his life.
This gathering reminds us that the Eucharist unites us with those who have gone before us. It strengthens our hope that life is transformed, not ended, in Christ. The legacy of Fr. Joseph continues to live on in the hearts of those he served.
As we remember him, we are also called to continue his mission: to serve with compassion, to remain faithful in our vocation, and to bring hope to others. In this way, his life continues to bear fruit in the Church.
May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his memory remain a blessing to us all.
