Bagong Silang – Feast of the Patron

On August 16, 2015, the Parish Community of Bagong Silang, Diocese of Novaliches, celebrated its Patronal Feast of St. Roque. As usual, the celebration was preceded with nine day novena masses to prepare the parishioners to participate fully in the fiesta activities. The theme chosen for this year was “Patuloy na paglalakbay tungo sa banal at lumalagong sambayanan kasama si Maria at San Roque” (Continuous journey towards holiness and growing community with Mary and San Roque).

St. Roque Parish was erected on June 19, 2011 and is being pastored by three SCJ priests; Fr. John Karl “Fr. Nonong” Cabaluna as the parish priest, assisted by Fr. Christopher “Fr. Cris” Alburo and Fr. Elpidio “Pjoe” Luza Jr.

Celebration of Death Anniversary of Fr. Leo Dehon in Cagayan de Oro

On August 12, 2015, the formation community of Cagayan de Oro, together with the SCJs from nearby communities, members of the Dehonian Family and friends of the Congregation, celebrated the 90th Death Anniversary of Fr. Leo Dehon, the founder of the Priests of the Sacred Heart. In his homily, Fr. Francis Pupkowski, scj, recalled the last moments of life of Fr. Dehon, summarized his activities and reflected on the challenges lying ahead of his spiritual sons and daughters. As usual the celebration was concluded with a common meal.

Words of gratitude from Kananga

One of the deadliest typhoons that passed through the Visayas Region on November 8, 2013, was typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), that left thousands of dead, destroyed completely many properties and houses leaving tens of thousands with nothing. The most affected places were Tacloban City and Bantayan Island.

Thanks to the former General Superior, Fr. Jose Ornelas Carvalho, scj,who sent a letter to the Congregation asking for help, many entities answered positively and because of this the SCJs were able to help many people in Tacloban area (Leyte Province) and Bantayan Island (Cebu Province), to build or rebuild their houses. In Leyte Province, the SCJs have provided new houses and materials to help rebuilding people’s houses for a total of 167 families (66 in Kananga and 101 in Tanauan and Tacloban). In Bantayan and Botong Islands 29 plus 47 houses respectively.

Recently, the office of the regional superior received a poster from the Holy Family Parish in Kananga in Leyte with the words of gratitude, which the SCJs from the Philippine Region want to share with all who have helped the victims of typhoon Yolanda.

Closing Mass

Today, on June 6, 2015, the XXIII General Chapter officially closed and the new superior general, Fr. Heiner Wilmer, was installed. The witnesses to Fr. Heiner’s oath were the out-going superior general, Fr. José Ornelas Carvalho, and Fr. Antonio Panteghini, who served as superior general from 1979 – 1991.

Admission to the Postulancy

“Be simple… be original.” These were the simple yet so profound words of Fr. Aloisio Back who presided the Mass during the admission of 10 new postulants, for this year’s formation program, on June 1, 2015, at the Sacred Heart Formation House in Cagayan de Oro City. These words of encouragement and challenge were also added with a reminder to use the Bible given them to learn more about God and themselves who are created in His image and likeness. We ask everyone to pray for these young men who offer themselves to further their understanding of their vocations.
