Celebrating the 98th Death Anniversary of the Founder

In a heartwarming tribute to the legacy of Ven. Fr. Leo John Dehon, the founder of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (SCJ), the formation community in Cagayan de Oro City came together to celebrate the 98th anniversary of his passing. The commemoration was a poignant blend of spiritual reflection, devotion, and joyful camaraderie that captured the essence of Fr. Dehon’s enduring influence.

The celebration unfolded in three distinct phases, each representing a crucial aspect of Fr. Dehon’s life and the impact he had on the community he founded.

The festivities kicked off on August 3, 2023, with a nine-day novena that delved into the rich tapestry of Fr. Dehon’s human and spiritual journey. Through heartfelt testimonies from individuals who had the privilege of personally knowing or encountering Fr. Dehon, the novena painted a vivid portrait of his character, virtues, and the profound insights that guided his mission. This spiritual preparation allowed attendees to connect deeply with the man behind the legacy and understand the principles that fueled his work.

The highlight of the anniversary celebration arrived on August 12, 2023, as the community gathered for a solemn Holy Eucharist. Presided over by Fr. Lukas Hadi Siswo Sasmito, SCJ, the Regional Superior, the Mass was a moment of reverence and renewal.

During the Eucharistic Celebration, three (3) aspirants were formally accepted into the Postulancy Program, symbolizing their commitment to the congregation’s ideals. Additionally, three (3) others were embraced into the Aspirancy Program, and six (6) embarked on the Orientation Year – a testament to the continued growth and nurturing of new vocations within the SCJ fold.

Following the morning Eucharist, the commemoration took on a vibrant twist with a day of sports and community bonding. The festive spirit was ushered in by a lively parade and invigorating Zumba session, setting the tone for the ensuing sports fest.

Amidst cheers and friendly competition, basketball, soccer, and badminton tournaments unfolded, showcasing not only the athletic prowess but also the camaraderie of the SCJ community. A spirit of inclusivity prevailed as participants of all levels demonstrated their dedication and passion.

As the day transitioned into evening, a different atmosphere settled in. After a touching period of adoration, a thoughtfully curated program, orchestrated by the seminarians, took center stage. This segment brought forth a sequence of presentations and recognitions that celebrated both the achievements of the community and the legacy of Fr. Dehon.

The 98th death anniversary of Ven. Fr. Leo Dehon was a multifaceted commemoration that blended spirituality, fellowship, and celebration. As the SCJ community united to honor the memory of their founder, they not only paid tribute to his visionary spirit but also rejuvenated their commitment to his timeless ideals. Through spiritual reflection, vibrant camaraderie, and acts of service, Fr. Dehon’s legacy continues to inspire and shape the lives of all who follow his path.
