On November 26, 2023, the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart (SCJ) commemorated the 59th death anniversary of Bishop Joseph Albert Wittebols, SCJ, and six other missionaries who were tragically killed during the Simba revolution in Congo in 1964. This somber occasion marked the SCJ Memorial Day, a day dedicated to remembering and honoring the SCJ martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sake of the Gospel and the Kingdom of God.
The SCJ Memorial Day is observed with special reverence in all SCJ formation communities, bringing together SCJ members, the Dehonian Family, friends, and benefactors. This year, the celebration in Dehon House, Manila, was led by Fr. Francis Pupkowski, SCJ, from Cagayan de Oro, who also oversees the fundraising program.
In his homily, delivered on the Solemnity of Christ the King, Fr. Pupkowski delved into the significance of this Feast, exploring what it means to be a servant of Christ’s Kingdom in today’s world. He emphasized the role of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in guiding our actions and the profound influence of SCJ martyrs and personalities on the congregation’s history. He challenged the congregation to embody the spirit of these martyrs by becoming “prophets of love and servants of reconciliation.”
Following the Eucharist, the community gathered for a shared meal, fostering a spirit of fellowship and unity amidst the somber remembrance of the martyrs’ sacrifices. The SCJ Memorial Day serves as a powerful reminder of the congregation’s unwavering commitment to spreading the message of Christ’s love and compassion, even in the face of adversity and persecution. The martyrs’ legacy lives on in the hearts of SCJ members and the countless individuals they have touched through their selfless service.
It is also worth noting that November 26, 2023, coincided with Benefactors’ Day in Manila. This special day is set aside to express gratitude to the generous individuals and organizations who have supported the SCJ’s mission through their financial contributions. Their unwavering support has been instrumental in enabling the SCJ to continue its important work of spreading the Gospel and serving those in need.
