It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we bid farewell to the late Bishop Ronald “Bong” Lunas, who departed this world on January 2, 2024. Bishop Lunas, a cherished friend of the SCJs (Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus), passed away at 57 years old at the Southern Philippines Medical Center Heart Institute in Davao City, where he had been undergoing intensive care following a recent heart bypass operation.
Born on November 27, 1966, in Bala, Magsaysay, within the Diocese of Digos, Bishop Lunas embarked on a remarkable journey of service to the Church. After completing his philosophy courses at the St. Francis Xavier College Seminary in Davao City, he pursued theology studies at the St. Francis Regional Major Seminary, where he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Digos on April 7, 1992.
Bishop Lunas furthered his education by obtaining a Licentiate in Sacred Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 1996. Following his studies in Rome, he dedicated himself to the formation of future clergy, serving as a professor and later as the dean at the St. Francis Xavier Regional Major Seminary. His commitment to education and faith was evident, leaving an indelible mark on those he taught.
In November 2018, Bishop Lunas was appointed Bishop of Pagadian and was ordained to the episcopate on February 11, 2019, becoming the first bishop from the clergy of the Digos diocese. Installed as the fifth bishop of Pagadian on March 25, 2019, he took on the role with grace and dedication.
As we mourn the passing of Bishop Ronald “Bong” Lunas, we remember his brilliant mind, holy life, and sweet smile. His legacy will endure in the hearts of those he touched. The funeral Mass is scheduled for January 11 at the Sto. Niño Cathedral in Pagadian City, where he will be laid to rest beside the church he served so faithfully. May he find eternal rest and peace in the arms of the Lord.
