This year marks a significant milestone for the Priests of the Sacred Heart (SCJ) in the Philippines – 35 years of serving the Filipino people. It’s a story that began with a vision, unwavering commitment, and a deep love for God and neighbor.
A Call to Serve: From Humble Beginnings to Flourishing Mission
The SCJ journey in the Philippines started in May 1989 with the arrival of eight priests from seven different countries. They were called to serve in Mindanao, a region known for its beauty and challenges. These pioneering missionaries, guided by the spirit of community and a preferential option for the poor, embarked on their mission with a commitment to live simply, share resources, and prioritize the needs of the local Church.
Overcoming Challenges, Building Hope
Their mission wasn’t without difficulties. From navigating rough terrains to the harrowing experience of Fr. Giuseppe Pierantoni’s kidnapping, the SCJ community persevered. Their faith and unwavering commitment to the Filipino people remained constant.
Fruits of Love and Compassion
The SCJ presence in the Philippines has blossomed into a vibrant mission. They have established parishes, provided scholarships, built houses for typhoon victims, and empowered communities through various social projects. Notably, their work with indigenous groups, victims of abuse, and the formation of future Filipino SCJ members are testaments to their dedication to social justice and nurturing local vocations.
Spreading the Message of Hope Beyond Borders
The SCJ mission extends beyond their physical locations. Their devotion to the Sacred Heart and the message of Fr. Dehon are shared throughout the Philippines, inspiring many through their thoughtful outreach programs. The future holds the promise of Filipino SCJ missionaries venturing out to share their gifts with other countries in Asia.
A Celebration of Gratitude
As the SCJ community in the Philippines celebrates 35 years of grace-filled service, they express their profound gratitude to God, the Filipino people, and their benefactors. They look forward to continuing their mission, building bridges of love, and spreading the message of Christ’s compassion in the years to come.
