From Humble Beginnings to Flourishing Mission: SCJ Marks 35 Years in the Philippines

The Priests of the Sacred Heart (SCJ) Philippine Region recently celebrated the 35th anniversary of their mission in the Philippines, a momentous occasion marked by joyous festivities and a renewed commitment to their calling.

The celebrations took place across various SCJ zones, with the main event held on May 28th, 2024, at the Sacred Heart Formation House in Cagayan de Oro City. The day commenced with a special Eucharistic celebration presided over by Fr. Eduardo Aguero, SCJ, one of the pioneering missionaries who arrived in the Philippines on May 17, 1989.

In his homily, Fr. Aguero offered a poignant reflection on the guiding principles that shaped the SCJ’s journey over the past three and a half decades. Drawing inspiration from the Gospel reading of the day (Mark 10:28-31), he highlighted the promise embedded in Jesus’ words to those who make sacrifices for the sake of the Gospel.

Following the Eucharistic celebration, a festive supper was served, and the evening continued with a program prepared by various groups, including the seminarians, Dehonian Youth, Lay Dehonians, Kasanag Daughters Foundation, and staff of CDO I. The program was further enriched by greetings from the SCJ communities in China, Indonesia, and Rome, delivered by Fr. Vincent Sri Herimanto, SCJ, the General Councilor, and Fr. Carlos Luis Cadorniu Suarez, SCJ, the General Superior.

The seminarians, entrusted with the program execution, showcased their talents and dedication, ensuring a well-prepared and engaging performance.

On the following day, May 29th, 2024, the Eucharistic celebration was held at the Immaculate Concepcion Parish in Aluba, presided over by the Provincial Superior of the Claretians, Fr. Elias L. Ayuban Jr., CMF. In his homily, Fr. Elias reflected on the moments of encountering the SCJs and shared his insights on joy and gratitude, mission and availability.

The 35th-anniversary celebration served as a momentous occasion for the SCJ in the Philippines, a time to reflect on their past accomplishments, recommit to their mission, and look forward to the future, all while fostering a spirit of unity within the Dehonian Family.

“This celebration is a testament to the unwavering dedication and compassion of the SCJ community in the Philippines,” said Fr. Rechie Custodio Gier, SCJ, MA, STL. “It is a time to give thanks for the blessings bestowed upon us and to rededicate ourselves to the values of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which have guided our work for the past 35 years.”

As the SCJ Philippine Region looks ahead, they remain committed to their mission of spreading love, compassion, and service to the Filipino people, particularly the poor, the sick, and the oppressed, through their various ministries and outreach programs.
