Benefactors’ Day and SCJ Memorial Day Celebration at Dehon House in Manila

On November 23, 2024, Dehon House in Manila hosted a special celebration of SCJ Memorial Day, a time set aside to honor the martyrs and influential members who have shaped the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart (SCJ). This occasion also served as Benefactors’ Day for the Manila area, recognizing those who support the SCJ’s work, and as the anticipated Mass for the Solemnity of Christ the King.

The celebration began with a Holy Eucharist at 5:00 PM, concelebrated and led by Fr. Francis Pupkowski, SCJ, who also coordinates local SCJ fundraising efforts. In his homily, Fr. Francis offered reflections on the various forms of martyrdom, from the ultimate sacrifice of life to daily acts of faithfulness and self-denial. He emphasized that all forms of martyrdom, red or white, call Christians to live as witnesses to Christ’s truth. Fr. Francis highlighted the contrast between worldly authority and Christ’s kingship, drawing from the Gospel account of Jesus standing before Pontius Pilate. Unlike earthly rulers who rely on control, Christ’s kingship is marked by sacrificial love—a love made perfect through His resurrection.

This year’s SCJ Memorial Day also anticipated the upcoming 150th anniversary of Fr. Leo Dehon’s passing in 2025. Fr. Dehon, founder of the Priests of the Sacred Heart, dedicated his life to social justice, care for the poor, and devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. His motto, Adveniat Regnum Tuum—“Thy Kingdom Come”—continues to inspire the SCJ community to live as agents of Christ’s love, truth, and service.

Following the Eucharistic celebration, attendees joined for a communal supper, bringing together SCJ members, benefactors, and guests from nearby cities, including Quezon City, Makati and Mandaluyong. A short video clip about Fr. Dehon was played during the meal, allowing guests to reflect further on his legacy of faith and compassion.

This year’s Benefactors’ Day and SCJ Memorial Day provided an opportunity to remember the martyrs, honor supporters, and renew the SCJ community’s commitment to Christ’s reign of love and truth, sharing in the fellowship that embodies Fr. Dehon’s enduring call to build God’s kingdom.
