In the Gospel, Jesus visits the home of Martha and Mary. Martha is busy preparing and serving, while Mary chooses to sit and listen to Jesus. When Martha complains, Jesus gently says, “Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. Mary has chosen the better part.”
This Gospel reminds us that being present to Jesus is more important than being busy for Him. Martha’s service was good, but Mary’s silence and attention were better.
Today, many of us are like Martha—not only busy, but distracted. With smartphones in hand, we are always connected, yet often absent from the people around us. Families sit together but do not talk. Even in religious communities, screens sometimes replace conversation and prayer.
In contrast, Mary teaches us the value of stillness, listening, and prayer. Abraham, in the first reading, shows us true hospitality—welcoming guests with full attention and generosity. Saint Paul reminds us that all service must flow from our union with Christ.
Let us reflect on these three points:
- Be like Abraham: welcome others with love and attention.
- Be like Mary: take time to listen to Jesus in silence.
- Be like Paul: let Christ live in you and guide all you do.
Let us not miss the Lord because we are too distracted. Let us choose the better part.
