Undas: A Call to Holiness — Celebrating the Solemnity of All Saints

On November 1, the Catholic Church joyfully celebrates the Solemnity of All Saints — a feast that honors all the saints, both known and unknown, who now share in the glory of God. In the Philippines, this day is lovingly called “Undas,” a term that reflects the nation’s deep faith and family-centered devotion. It is a time when Filipino families visit cemeteries, light candles, offer prayers, and remember their beloved dead in the light of Christian hope.

While Undas is often associated with visiting graves, its true meaning is rooted in celebrating holiness. On this day, the Church looks to heaven and gives thanks for the countless men and women who have faithfully lived the Gospel — not only the canonized saints we venerate but also the humble and hidden souls who quietly reflected God’s love in their daily lives.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1–12a), offering us the map of Christian holiness. These words are not reserved for a select few; they are a call for every believer. The saints are those who have lived these Beatitudes — poor in spirit, gentle and merciful, seekers of justice and peace, pure of heart, and steadfast in times of trial. Their lives were not always easy, but they found deep joy in following Christ and trusting His promises.

The Beatitudes remind us that true happiness does not come from wealth, comfort, or success, but from living in communion with God and others. The saints found joy not in having more, but in loving more. They teach us that holiness is not about doing extraordinary things, but about doing ordinary things with extraordinary love.

On this Feast of All Saints, we are invited to remember that we, too, are called to be saints. Holiness is not distant or impossible — it is a daily choice to love, forgive, and serve. As Pope Francis said, “To be saints is not a privilege for the few, but a call for everyone.” Each of us can reflect God’s holiness in our own place and vocation.

As we celebrate Undas, may we not only honor the memory of our departed loved ones but also renew our desire to live as disciples of Christ. Let us look to the saints for inspiration, and may their example guide us toward the eternal joy of heaven — our true home.

Prayer:
Lord God,
You are the source of all holiness.
We thank You for the saints who have gone before us
and for those whose faith continues to inspire us today.
As we celebrate Undas,
help us to live the Beatitudes with courage and love,
that we may one day rejoice with all the saints in Your kingdom.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
