Sacred Heart Formation House, Cagayan de Oro City, 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel, Jesus helps us understand the true meaning of the Law. He does not come to abolish it, but to bring it to fullness. This means that God’s commandments are not only about external actions, but also about the heart. Jesus shows that faith is not a matter of doing the minimum required, but of allowing God’s will to shape our thoughts, intentions, and attitudes. For example, it is not enough to avoid killing; we are called to reject anger, hatred, and contempt. In the same way, fidelity is not limited to avoiding adultery; it involves purity of heart, respect for others, and responsibility for our relationships.

Jesus’ teaching may seem demanding, but it is deeply liberating. He invites us to honesty, integrity, and simplicity. When He speaks about oaths, He reminds us that a truthful person does not need many words or promises. A simple “yes” or “no” should be enough. This challenges us to examine our daily behavior: our speech, our commitments, and the way we treat others. For instance, in family life, at work, or in the community, our words should build trust, not confusion or fear.

This Gospel calls us to an inner conversion. True righteousness is not about appearing good before others, but about living in harmony with God’s love. Jesus invites us to go deeper, to let His Word transform our hearts so that our actions flow naturally from love. When we take this path seriously, our lives become a quiet but powerful witness. We show that God’s law is not a burden, but a guide that leads to freedom, peace, and genuine joy.
