Fr. Francis Pupkowski, SCJ
The celebration of the 95th death anniversary of Fr. Leo John Dehon, the founder of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (SCJ), in the formation community in Cagayan de Oro City was preceded as usual with the nine-day novena. On August 11, 2020, in the evening the community watched a video clip presenting the life and activities of Fr. Dehon, which was followed by the Holy Hour.
On August 12, 2020, during the day, the SCJ candidates, together with the priests and employees of the formation house were having their finals in volleyball, basketball, and soccer, which started at the end of the previous week. Some also played badminton and other indoor games.
At 6:00 PM, the whole community, together with the SCJs from the nearby communities and employees, were holding the most important part of the celebration, which was the Holy Eucharist presided by Fr. Francis Pupkowski, SCJ. The Mass was held live on Facebook, so the members of the Dehonian Family and friends could follow it online, due to the restrictions connected with the coronavirus. In his homily, Fr. Francis recalled the last moments of the life of Fr. Dehon, summarized his activities and reflected on the challenges lying ahead of his spiritual sons and daughters.
The Eucharist was followed by a common meal, announcement of winners of the different games, and competition in songwriting, arts, and essays prepared by the SCJ candidates. The candidates proved to be very skillful and creative, which added a flavor to the celebration. It was indeed a great celebration.
