There is something uncomfortable about today’s Gospel.

A Canaanite mother comes to Jesus because her daughter is suffering. She cries out for help, but Jesus seems silent. The disciples want her to go away.

Yet Jesus finally says:

“O woman, great is your faith!”

Why was her faith great?

Because she refused to give up. She trusted Jesus even when everything seemed to tell her to walk away.

She was an outsider, but she crossed every barrier to reach Jesus. And Jesus himself had crossed a border, entering Gentile territory.

The message is clear: sometimes God takes us beyond our comfort zone to teach us something we could never learn inside it.

The woman teaches us what to do when God seems silent:

Keep going. Keep praying. Keep trusting.

Her simple prayer can become ours:

“Lord, help me.”

When we are tired.
When we are discouraged.
When someone we love is suffering.
When we do not know what to do.

But the Gospel also challenges us.

We all have borders. There are people we welcome easily and others we keep at a distance.

Perhaps we have our own “Canaanites”—someone who hurt us, someone different from us, someone whose past we cannot accept, or someone we have decided does not deserve another chance.

So the Gospel asks:

Who have I placed outside my circle?

Can I build a bridge where I have built a wall?

The spirituality of the Sacred Heart gives us the answer.

The Heart of Christ is an open heart. It moves toward the wounded, the forgotten, and those who are searching.

If we want to live from the Heart of Christ, our hearts must become wider.

God’s mercy has no borders.

And if Christ has made room for us at his table, we must learn to make room for others.

Our Action Plan

🔹 Cross one border — reach out to someone outside your usual circle.
🔹 Persevere in one prayer — bring one difficult intention to Jesus: “Lord, help me.”
🔹 Break one wall — identify one resentment, prejudice, fear, or old hurt.
🔹 Carry someone to Jesus — pray for someone who is suffering or far from God.
🔹 Make room at the table — help someone who feels excluded know that there is a place for them.

Perhaps the question to take home is:

Is my heart becoming more like the Heart of Christ?

More open?
More compassionate?
More forgiving?
More welcoming?

May the faith of the Canaanite woman teach us to trust Jesus even when he seems silent.

And may the Heart of Christ teach us to cross borders, break walls, and make room for others.

“My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.”
